Becoming a University Scholar
Letter of Intent - Frequently Asked Questions:
Each student intending to apply to the University Scholar Program must submit a one-page Letter of Intent to the Honors Program Office indicating the general area they plan to work in and listing at least one faculty member he or she has already consulted about her/his proposal.
Letters of intent must be submitted to the Honors Office, CUE, Room 419 (Unit 2147) by Tuesday, September 15, 2009.
Who is required to submit a letter of intent?
Students who plan to apply for the University Scholar Program must submit a letter of intent.
Is the letter required?
The letter is mandatory. You must submit a letter of intent by the deadline in order to be eligible to apply for the University Scholar Program.
When is the letter of intent due?
The firm deadline for the letter of intent to apply for the University Scholar Program is September 15, 2009.
To whom should your letter of intent be addressed?
The letter of intent should be in the format of a letter addressed to the members of the University Scholar Oversight and Selection Committee.
What should your letter of intent include?
Your letter of intent should include the following:
- Your name, your student ID#, and the date.
- A statement that you intend to apply for the University Scholar Program during the current semester.
- A brief (3-5 sentences) description of your area of interest and possible project topic.
- The name of at least one faculty member with whom you have discussed your proposal.
What happens after you submit your letter of intent?
- Only students who submit letters of intent by the deadline are eligible to apply for the University Scholar Program.
- Students who submit a letter of intent by the deadline will be invited (via huskymail) to a University Scholar Proposal Preparation Workshop that will take place later in September.
- To be considered for the University Scholar selection process you will need to submit a complete application by the deadline.
What happens if your proposal topic changes somewhat from the time that you submit a letter of intent to when you submit an application for the University Scholar Program?
Your area of interest and project topic are likely to undergo modifications between the time you write your letter of intent and your proposal. The primary purpose of the letter of intent deadline is to demonstrate that you have initiated your investigation of your project options. The University Scholar proposal process is intensive. It is important for you, early in the semester, to have begun to make contacts with faculty who may assist you with your proposal and may become members of your Advisory Committee.
